Function X Economy

Q: Do you agree or disagree with the position that design is a result of “function x economy”? Do you think design today an ‘art’ or a ‘science’? Should it be one or the other, or can it be both?

A: After reading 'The First Machine Age in Europe," I would agree that the position of design is a result of 'function x economy" and I would argue that design today is still more of an 'science' than a art.' An mans mastery of mechanics, for functional use, brought about the machine age of today, with the numerous enhancements and development over the decades. The mechanical principles of mans creation of 'the machine' has brought wealth to many nations in Europe, as these principles are a value to society. Without design, the 'Machine Age' would have never occurred.

Aside from several aspects relating to the 'machine' I personally stand by my argument that design is still just a factor of science rather than an art. The definition of  an 'artists' to me is somebody with the ability to create something with originality that does not need to be enhanced, while science is often a factor for 'development,' and what materials, electronics or any other aspects of design are needed to develop the project further. A scientific knowledge of a person is crucial for design development, as design is result of function x economy

171 Blog Post- The Symbolic Universe

Q: In this week’s lecture we discussed the concept of the “symbolic universe” as a cultural “structure of legitimation” capable of organizing the social world as comprehensible and connected. The structure of the symbolic universe then, places the individual in a known and knowable space. Such social structures are critical for societies in transition. Can you identify the creation of any “symbolic universe” today (or in recent years)? How might media and design be implicated in the construction of these social universes today?

A: The Symbolic Universe is an example of the social construction of reality and is created to be legitimate to a self-created institutional structure e.g Parliament. They are viewed as a set of beleifs that are 'familiar' to society that attempt to make an institutionalized structure valuable to society/or to an individual who has little understanding of the logic of the institution. Each and every one of us has a symbolic universe which helps build our reality and outlook on life. An example of a 'symbolic universe' today would be religion, and the different points of views people have on the world, and/or how the universe came to be. There is much argumentation over religion, and this is usually influenced by media and design.
Religion, as a social universe is often displayed in artwork, for instance, stained glass windows in church buildings are often associated with a particular religion e.g christianity or judaism, and this is an example of design and art that religion is associated with. Religion is usually portrayed with a single symbol or logo e.g a cross for christianity, or a star for judaism. In the media, there are many factual statements about each kind of religion, which make people beleive in all the things associated with it as it what occured in order for life to be created, or what occurs after death, if that particular religion believes in an afterlife. The media is often a big influence with the creation of a social universe associated with religion or finding your place in a religion.
